The Orange Shoulder Surgeonfish (Acanthurus olivaceus), also known as the Orange Shoulder Tang, is a stunning marine fish admired for its unique colouration, active swimming behaviour and impressive transformation from juvenile to adult.
As juveniles, these beautiful surgeonfish display a vibrant yellow body. As they mature, their colouration gradually transforms into a striking combination of grey, olive and blue tones, with a distinctive bright orange marking developing behind the gills. This dramatic colour change makes the Orange Shoulder Tang a fascinating addition to any large marine aquarium.
Naturally found throughout the Indo-Pacific, Orange Shoulder Surgeonfish are active swimmers that spend much of their time grazing on algae and exploring their surroundings. They are generally considered reef safe and can make excellent additions to spacious, established marine aquariums.

Keeping Your Orange Shoulder Surgeonfish Healthy
Orange Shoulder Surgeonfish thrive in large, established marine aquariums with excellent water quality, plenty of swimming space and mature rockwork for grazing.
As an active grazing species, they require a varied diet rich in marine algae. Regular offerings of dried nori, spirulina-based pellets and quality frozen marine foods will help support healthy growth, strong colouration and overall wellbeing.
Although generally less aggressive than some other Acanthurus tangs, Orange Shoulder Surgeonfish may become territorial towards similar-looking surgeonfish, particularly in smaller aquariums. Careful consideration should be given when introducing them to an established community.
Due to their potential adult size and active swimming behaviour, this species is best suited to experienced marine hobbyists with spacious aquariums.
With its incredible colour transformation, distinctive orange shoulder marking and constant activity, the Orange Shoulder Surgeonfish is a spectacular centrepiece for a large reef or fish-only marine aquarium.
