Discus have earned their nickname as the King of the Aquarium, and once you've kept one, it's easy to see why. We stock some of the best discus fish NZ has to offer, and we'll happily talk your ear off about pH, pecking order and grading if you let us.
Every discus that leaves our Christchurch shop has settled in, put on condition, and had a proper once-over from the team at Simply Fish, so when you're comparing discus fish for sale NZ-wide, you're getting straight advice, not just a sales pitch. We also source from trusted breeders around the country, so you're getting quality stock from day one, not just whatever came in on the truck.

Our discus rotate through a mix of strains, from Red Turquoise and Checkerboard to Snakeskin, Cobalt and Albino. Numbers change weekly, so if a colour catches your eye, grab it before it swims off.
Every fish is sold individually, so you know exactly which discus is coming home with you. Chasing something specific? Flick us a message on Facebook or Instagram and we'll confirm what's swimming.
The blue diamond discus is one of our most requested strains, prized for its solid, near-metallic blue body with barely a stripe in sight. It's the kind of discus you can spot from across the shop, one bold block of colour and nothing else competing for attention.
Grading matters as much as colour, and our team can talk you through size, shape and finnage before you commit.

Discus are divas about their water, and stable and warm is non-negotiable. Aim for 28 to 30°C, keep it steady with a reliable aquarium heater, and add discus only to a tank that's fully cycled and mature, not a new one.
Complete aquarium filtration matters just as much as temperature. Discus produce plenty of waste for their size, so strong filtration and regular water changes keep ammonia and nitrite in check. Aquarium water testing kits take the guesswork out of it, especially early on.

Discus are pack animals at heart, and a lone discus in a community tank is basically the new kid eating lunch alone. Aim for five or six to establish a pecking order, in a tank sized for their adult diameter of 15 to 20cm.
Stick to calm tank mates that enjoy the same warm water, like cardinal tetras, corydoras and rams. Skip anything that needs cooler conditions or has a nippy reputation.
Discus eat like they're training for something. Food formulated for Discus covers their nutritional needs without the guesswork, and frozen foods for tropical fish, like bloodworms and brine shrimp, make a great supplement a few times a week.
Small, frequent feeds beat one big meal. Little and often keeps water quality stable and matches how discus feed in the wild.

You can collect your discus from our Christchurch store, or we'll ship via NZ Couriers' overnight service, dispatched Monday or Tuesday morning. Every order is covered by our DOA policy: photograph any issue in the sealed bag within two hours and email us straight away. Rural addresses usually collect from the nearest depot rather than getting doorstep delivery.
Float the sealed bag for 15 to 20 minutes to match the temperature, then gradually add small amounts of tank water into the bag over the next half hour. Net the fish out, then let the bag water drain down the sink rather than into the tank.
Every discus in the range above is fair game, and if you're chasing a specific strain or grade, just ask. Christchurch locals are welcome to drop into the store and see the current lineup in person, or we'll get one shipped straight to your door anywhere in NZ.
