Banded Coral Shrimp (Large)
The Banded Coral Shrimp (Stenopus hispidus) is one of the most distinctive shrimp available for marine aquariums. With bold red and white banding, long flowing white antennae and oversized claws, it adds plenty of character and movement to a reef or saltwater setup.
Also known as the Coral Banded Shrimp or Boxing Shrimp, this species is relatively hardy once established and will often make its home beneath overhangs, inside caves or amongst established rockwork.

Aquarium Care
Provide plenty of rockwork, caves and sheltered areas where the Banded Coral Shrimp can establish a territory and retreat when required.
They are generally compatible with fish and corals but can become territorial towards other Banded Coral Shrimp and smaller ornamental shrimp. Unless you have a confirmed pair and suitable space, they are usually best kept individually.
During moulting, the shrimp may disappear into the rockwork for a day or two while its new exoskeleton hardens. This is normal behaviour, and secure hiding places are particularly important during this period.
Feeding
Banded Coral Shrimp are opportunistic scavengers and will readily accept a wide variety of aquarium foods, including:
- Frozen mysis shrimp
- Brine shrimp
- Finely chopped marine seafood
- Quality sinking marine pellets
- Other meaty frozen foods
They may also display natural cleaning behaviour around fish and will spend time searching the rockwork and substrate for leftover food.
Water Quality & Acclimation
Like most marine invertebrates, Banded Coral Shrimp require stable salinity and good water quality. They should be acclimated carefully when introduced to a new aquarium and must never be exposed to copper-based medications.
With its dramatic antennae, bold red and white colouration and entertaining scavenging behaviour, the Banded Coral Shrimp is an eye-catching addition to an established marine or reef aquarium.
